Julie Howland

RN, BSN, MNA, MLNHA, FACHCA

Julie Howland has served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Amicus since November 2015, becoming only the third person to hold this position since the agency's founding in 1971. A proud Maine native, Julie brings over two decades of experience in nursing, healthcare management, and nonprofit leadership to her role at Amicus.

Julie began her career in nursing at Houlton Regional Hospital before transitioning to a decade-long tenure in Human Resource Management at Community Health and Counseling Services in Bangor. Prior to joining Amicus, she worked as a licensed Multi-Level Nursing Home Administrator (MLNHA), earning a reputation for her dedication to quality care. A Fellow of the American College of Health Care Administrators (FACHCA), Julie was recognized as the 2014 Member of the Year by the Maine Chapter of ACHCA.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) from the University of Maine Orono. In 2015, she completed her graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame's esteemed Mendoza College of Business where she received a merit-based fellowship. She earned an Executive Master of Nonprofit Administration (MNA), a specialized MBA program focused on nonprofit leadership. Reflecting the MNA program's motto, "Servant Heart. Business Mind.," Julie embodies a compassionate yet strategic approach to leadership.

Deeply committed to nonprofit, healthcare, and social services, Julie's passion is rooted not only in her professional experience but also in her personal journey. As the mother of an adult son, Adam, who was born with severe disabilities, Julie has firsthand experience navigating the healthcare and intellectual disabilities (ID) continuum of care systems. Her decision to pursue nursing was driven by her desire to be the best mother and advocate she could be. This personal and professional nexus fuels her passion for working with others to break down barriers and create meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Julie also plays a vital role as a part-time accreditation surveyor for CARF International, where she champions health and human service providers in the U.S. and Canada to enhance service excellence through consultative peer reviews. Her work underscores her commitment to continuous quality improvement and advancing the quality of life for individuals served by these organizations.

Outside of her professional life, Julie enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, reading, and exploring Maine's natural beauty on day trips. She resides in Bangor with her husband, Todd, their German Shepherd, Saul, and their Yorkshire Terriers. An active Rotarian, Julie is a member of the Bangor Breakfast Rotary Club and will begin her term as the club's President on July 1, 2025.
